Flow cytometry is quantitative single cell analysis technique developed in the 1970s, which become rapidly an essential technology for the biological and clinical sciences. The major clinical use is the diagnosis of haematological malignancies. Immunophenotyping, the identification and quantification of cellular antigens with fluorochrome-labeled monoclonal antibodies is one of the most important applications of flow cytometers. It provides information for initial diagnosis and classification of acute leukemia, chronic lymphatic diseases and malignant lymphomas and is the basis for decision-making in clinical treatment strategies. In addition, immunophenotypic analysis provides prognostic information not available with other techniques and is a highly sensitive method for treatment monitoring.
It is therefore obvious that flow cytometry is an ideal tool for following up of the success of HIV/AIDS treatment, particularly in developing countries. The flow cytometric enumeration of CD4 T-cells is by far more cost effective method and does not require the same high laboratory standards as for the alternative method, the determination of the HIV viral load.
HUMAN offers one of the most affordable systems on the market for flow cytometric applications for HIV monitoring.
